I love living in Austin. I wouldn’t live anywhere else, except maybe Sydney or maybe Santa Barbara. Recently I found something out about my town that I really wasn’t aware of before… The Green Belt including Zilker Park. Holy crap. You walk a mile down this path and come to an oasis in the urban desert. Rapids, a big pool you can swim in… Gorgeous, peaceful, even when full of people. Why did I have to live in Austin 10 years for someone to tell me about this?

Nope, I ain’t moving.

So, we bring to a close another run of joyful paid unworkable days, as Austin opens her bleary eyes and shakes the ice off. True to the American Dream, no one could make it to work during the ice storm, and yet many people were out shopping yesterday afternoon. I’m actually glad to be back at work, as I have important business to take care of this week.
Wow, these two day work weeks are KILLING me…

This morning, they’ve closed most of downtown Austin because of the mysterious deaths of about a dozen pigeons. The fire department was called in to collect the animals and send them to a lab to figure out what killed them. Preliminary air tests showed nothing out of the ordinary that might have caused the birds to all die together.

What strikes me most about this situation is how we might have responded to this same event prior to the attacks of September 11th, 2001. We would have completely disregarded it and it wouldn’t have even merited a mention in local news. Terrorism has affected us so fundamentally that everyone — myself included — is anxious for these lab results.

To me, the most likely explanation is pranksters or the cold, but we’ll see.

Update 12:53pm: Looks like there is no credible threat. See the complete story here.
